JANUARY 2010

MSSU EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR POSITION - The Miracle Strip Service Unit Council (which includes members from Bay (ABCE), Gulf and Walton counties) is diligently searching for a new Executive Director after former MSSU Executive Director, Brian Phillips, accepted another job in Jacksonville, Florida, on January 4, 2010.

While the council continues the hiring process of a new executive director, the MSSU council has hired Yvette Griffin as Acting Executive Director. Yvette is a retired Bay District Schools teacher and former ABCE President. If you need her assistance please contact her at the ABCE office at 763-3416 or yvette.griffin@floridaea.org.

DIGITAL GRADEBOOK (Parent Portal)- ABCE believes that the implementation of the Digital Gradebook system is an issue for contract negotiations and MUST be bargained. While we encourage every teacher to follow the directives of your site supervisor, ABCE would like your input on how the use of the digital gradebook impacts your working conditions.

Please contact your Association Representative and give them specific information on how using the digital gradebook impacts your working conditions.

RACE TO THE TOP - The Florida Department of Education decided not to release their "Race to the Top" plan that would directly effect all school districts in Florida. The federal program calls for all school districts to work collaboratively with the educator professional organizations and sign a Memorandum of Understanding. However, the FL DOE elected not to release their plan in its entirety and ABCE believes it would be irresponsible to sign a MOU giving support to a document that we have not been able to review.

CUTS HURT... MAKE OUR SCHOOLS A PRIORITY!

 TALKING POINTS

Make Our Schools A Priority by:

  • Keeping our veteran teachers from leaving the classroom.
  • Making sure students get the individualized attention they need.
  • Ensuring a well-rounded education for all students.
  • Keeping our classrooms up-to-date.
  • Giving our teachers more time to teach and students more time to learn.

 This can be accomplished by:

  • Allow county School Boards to levy the max under Capital Outlay and direct any "new" revenue to go to the General Operating Budget WITHOUT a local referendum.
  • Eliminate many of the tax exemptions that make little or no economic sense to the average citizen. Get rid of special interest tax exemptions.
  • Pass an additional 1 cent sales tax for education to sunset in 3 years.
